A downloadable game

Concept

A family from one part of the world moves to another part of the world, ostensibly to reinvent themselves, recover from a loss, or simply to start over. This is a game about self discovery, defining what it means to be home, and the strength of the family in trying times.

Aim

The characters explore the community and establish their place in it, navigating cultural differences, while being respectful and gracious.

Tone

The game strives to build sweet stories with sympathetic if flawed characters. The family may grate on each other but ultimately love and respect each other. The family may be foreign and clumsy, but ultimately they respect the community, its people, and its culture.

Subject Matter

The Family Abroad covers family relations that might sometimes strain under stress. It explicitly highlights cross-cultural relations and may wade into ignorance and prejudice. The purpose of the game is to maintain respect while navigating these differences.

Touchstones

The primary touchstone is The Durrells, a series by ITV that appeared on Masterpiece in the US. This series is in turn based on the Corfu Trilogy by Gerald Durrell, who appears in the series as a boy between the ages of 10 and 13. Another touchstone for me is Northern Exposure, a US TV series from the early 90s.

Tropes

Some of the essential tropes of this subgenre are:

  • The family is in some kind of dire strait, precipitating the move abroad
  • The family moves to a place that isn’t so foreign from what they know, but they are definitely fish out of water
  • The family is torn maintaining the identity of their cultural origin while adapting to the culture of their new home
  • The family experiences homesickness and alienation, but is committed to staying in their new home
