The defining trope of the fantasy pairs subgenre is that the two main characters are near-polar opposites. The Witcher’s Gerald and Jaskier, for example, have different strengths and personalities. The same is true for Fafhrd and The Grey Mouser. Likewise, Xena and Gabrielle have different demeanors and fighting styles.
